About Us

The Transformative Justice Institute is a mission-driven organization working at the intersection of international law, transitional justice, and transformative justice. We focus on addressing the enduring harms produced by settler colonialism, colonial exploitation, civil conflict, mass violence, and contemporary neo-colonial economic practices, including those linked to corporate activity and global supply chains.

Our work engages directly with the structural and historical dimensions of harm—from land dispossession and cultural erasure to systemic inequality and institutionalized violence. We are particularly concerned with how these harms persist across generations and are reproduced through legal, political, and economic systems.

Building on the field of transitional justice, which traditionally emphasizes mechanisms such as truth commissions, criminal accountability, reparations programs, and institutional reform, we advance a transformative justice approach. While transitional justice has made critical contributions—particularly in post-conflict and post-authoritarian settings—scholarship increasingly demonstrates its limitations in addressing root causes of injustice, including structural inequality, colonial legacies, and socio-economic exclusion.

Transformative justice has emerged from both critical scholarship and praxis, including feminist, Indigenous, and decolonial perspectives. It expands the scope of justice beyond transition periods and beyond formal legal mechanisms. Rather than focusing solely on addressing past violations, it seeks to transform the underlying conditions that produced harm, emphasizing redistribution, structural change, and long-term societal repair. Research across diverse contexts—including Latin America, Canada, and post-conflict societies—highlights that without addressing these deeper structures, processes of reconciliation remain partial and fragile.

Our approach integrates tools from both fields. We work with:

• Truth-seeking mechanisms such as commissions and documentation processes
• Accountability frameworks, including international criminal law and corporate accountability regimes
• Reparations and redistribution models
• Institutional and legal reform strategies
• Community-based and participatory justice processes

We translate these frameworks into practical, usable formats, ensuring that complex legal and theoretical knowledge becomes actionable for those working on the ground.

We design and deliver workshops, seminars, and tailored programs that build capacity in transitional and transformative justice, international law, and decolonial approaches—particularly for actors operating in complex, high-stakes environments.

2) Applied Research & Knowledge Translation

We transform rigorous academic research into accessible, practice-oriented outputs, including policy briefs, toolkits, and implementation guides. Our work helps bridge the gap between scholarship and real-world application.

3) Convening & Dialogue

We create structured spaces for cross-sector dialogue, bringing together affected communities, practitioners, scholars, and institutions to engage in principled discussion and co-develop practical pathways forward.

4) Advisory & Consulting

We support organizations, public institutions, and companies in designing and evaluating initiatives related to reconciliation, corporate responsibility, historical accountability, and structural reform.

Transformative justice offers a broader horizon: one that not only addresses past violations but also reconfigures the systems that made them possible. It centers dignity, redistribution, and long-term repair, while building conditions for non-repetition and sustainable peace.

Our work draws on global experiences—including processes such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada—while critically engaging with their limitations to develop more holistic and durable approaches to justice.
